If a lawyer asks me to sign a retainer agreement, namely, a commitment agreement, do I have to give him or her all my case, or can I just give a part of it?

Former employer is ignoring reimbursing $10K of expenses. There was no written expense policy, only verbal. What kind of legal action can I take?
